The Guide Promise
Girl Guiding offers an IDEAL and a SPIRIT. The Promise and Law is the pivot of the Movement. They are the fundamental principles of the Movement, which every member should observe. A personal commitment to these principles leads to a code of living in which the individual learns to accept and to develop her responsibilities towards the community.

The Guide Motto

Be Prepared

The motto, Be Prepared , shares the Founder’s initials and is a practical reminder of the educational purposes of Girl Guiding.

The Guide Law
1. A Guide is loyal and can be trusted
2. A Guide is useful and helps others
3. A Guide is polite, considerate and respects her elders
4. A Guide is friendly and a sister to all Guides
5. A Guide is kind to all living things
6. A Guide is obedient
7. A Guide has courage and is cheerful in all difficulties
8. A Guide takes care of her own possessions and those of other people
9. A Guide Is thrifty and
10. A Guide is self-disciplined in what she thinks, says and does

The Sign, Salute, Handshake

The Guide Sign
The Guide Sign is given at the making of the Promise or as a greeting. Guides also give the sign when they are in mufti but they must be wearing a form of Guide identification like the Trefoil, the World Badge or a Guide T-shirt.

The sign is made by raising your right hand to shoulder level, palm to the front, thumb resting on the nail of the little finger and the other three fingers together pointing upwards. The three fingers represent the Three-Fold Promise.

The Guide Salute
The Guide Salute is given by enrolled members in full uniform as a sign of respect:
1. at the breaking of colours;
2. at an Enrolment Ceremony;
3. at a presentation of awards ceremony;
4. when the World Flag is carried ceremonially;
5. when greeting members of the Guide and Scout Movements; and
6. at the playing of the National AnthemGuides will obey the orders of the person-in-charge with regards to saluting.

The Guide Handshake
Guides shake hands with one another with the left hand. The left hand is closer to the heart and so symbolises friendship. When asked to explain the origin, Baden-Powell related a legend told to him in West Africa: two hostile neighbouring tribal groups decided to try to live in peace together, and so they flung down their shields, which were carried on the left arm, and advanced, unprotected, to greet each other with their left hands extended in trust and friendship.

A GOOD TURN

''A Good Turn a Day'' -- This is one of the golden rules of Guides all over the world. Doing something to help is a good turn. It need not be something particularly big or showy.
